Coinsource: Trader App and ATM Dashboard
Sr. Product Designer → Design Director • Aug 2019 – Oct 2021 • Dallas, TX (Remote)
The Challenge: Coinsource had no internal design team — all UI was outsourced. The B2B ATM dashboard saw high abandonment (<12% repeat usage), and there was zero consumer-facing product. COVID-19 created urgent need for a reliable online crypto trading platform.
Results: Daily Active Users: +31% (Trader App: +100%). Average session duration: +268%. Enabled $22M in traded volume in first 6 months. Design team velocity: +400% and team growth from 0 → 4
Goal: Redesign the B2B ATM dashboard for better usability and launch a zero-to-one B2C native trading app (iOS/Android) in under 90 days while building the company’s first internal design capability.
My Role: Solo designer who scaled to Design Director. Led end-to-end design of the Trader app and Dashboard redesign, built and mentored the first design team (0→4), and established the company’s design and brand system.
Process: Conducted trader interviews, competitive audits (Coinbase, Binance, Chime), and journey mapping. Iterated from lo-fi to hi-fi in 2-week agile sprints with regular user testing. Built a Sketch design system with 58 components and responsive patterns. Delivery and partnership with out-sourced agency for development.
Key Design Decisions: Real-time performance charts and data visualizations for ATM owners to monitor location, health, and metrics. Clean, trustworthy interface for the Trader App focused on clarity, speed, and reliability (shifted from whimsical to modular fintech style). Comprehensive brand + design system applied across dashboard, app, marketing site, events, and swag — achieving 100% internal adoption.
Takeaways: This project demonstrated how human-centered design, rapid iteration, and a strong scalable design system can transform confusing, high-stakes interfaces into intuitive, inclusive experiences that users trust. By simplifying complex data flows and building reusable components, we dramatically improved usability and adoption for both business users and everyday customers. I am very proud of this work!
DASHBOARD REDESIGN: Conisource's main product was the B2B dashboard for ATM owners. I started by updating the existing dashboard with a new design and new features. I enjoy designing dashboards like these and all of the data visualization and features that go along with them. It was more of a refresh with new brand colors, fonts, iconography and side menu to name a few. We also built completely new features like the ATM dashboard so owners could quickly check the performance and health of their ATMs.
ONLINE CRYPTO TRADER: When Covid hit we had to make a quick pivot. With a lockdown in place less people would be out using ATMs. We needed to act quickly and build an online product so that users could buy and sell crypto online. I was excited. I started off with some competitive analysis (Coinbase, Kraken) and began with rough wire concepts based on our competitors flows and initial design work began.
TRADER APP: Designing for Crypto at the time was fun. Designs tended to be bright, colorful and whimsical so I primarily went with that approach. I wanted it to be fun but trust worthy and intuitive, also it gave me a chance to break out my illustration chops. By the time we had a good idea of the design approach and most of the designs fleshed out we had a CHANGE OF PLANS! Leadership wanted to partner with a bank and make a native app instead... of course. Thinking fast and pivoting is the name of the game. I didn't miss a beat we began another round of competitive analysis (Chime, Paypal) and began new wireframes and solidified final designs.
DESIGN SYSTEM: I decided to clean up the overall design. I felt the more effective approach for a trusted app that involved banks and finances should be clean, intuitive and straight forward. I left the fun and whimsical elements for the splash screens and went with a modular component based system based upon Material design elements, Human Centered Design and WCAG principles for an overall cleaner, accessible, tactical design. I leveraged other crypto and fintech apps to inform the overall design and flows. We also added an all important map feature to find Coinsource ATMs.
FINALIZED DESIGN: Once designs and flows were finalized we began working with the agency Razorfish for final handoff to development. It was an intense relationship filled with Miro boards and detailed notations and endless edge cases. I also had to protect and defend my designs against some pretty heavy hitters. It was a great lesson for myself and our small startup team to see how a big time agency handled building products.
RESULTS: We moved fast, pivoted, made hard decisions and delivered. When the final product was shipped we delivered a DAU +31% Avg. and session duration +268% CSAT(traders). This project was a whirlwind that made us pivot several times under a very aggressive timeline. In the end we were able to get it done. I'm very proud of this work.
